A Path Guessing Game with Wagering
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider a two-player game in which the first player (the Guesser) tries to guess, edgeby-edge, the path that second player (the Chooser) takes through a directed graph. At each step, the Guesser makes a wager as to the correctness of her guess, and receives a payoff proportional to her wager if she is correct. We derive optimal strategies for both players for various classes of graphs, and describe the Markov-chain dynamics of the game under optimal play. These results are applied to the infinite-duration Lying Oracle Game, in which the Guesser must use information provided by an unreliable Oracle to predict the outcome of a coin toss.

Bounded Rationality in Wagering Mechanisms
Wagering mechanisms allow decision makers to inexpensively collect forecasts from groups of experts who reveal their information via bets with one another. Such mechanisms naturally induce a game in which strategic considerations come into play. What happens in the game depends on the reasoning power of the experts. At one extreme, if experts are fully rational, no-trade theorems imply no parti...

The game of Jeopardy!i features four types of strategic decision-making: 1) Daily Double wagering; 2) Final Jeopardy! wagering; 3) selecting the next square when in control of the board; and 4) deciding whether to attempt to answer, i.e., ‘‘buzz in.’’ Strategies that properly account for the game state and future event probabilities can yield a huge boost in overall winning chances, when compar...
متن کاملThe Multiple Word Guessing Game
In this paper I bring together a number of insights in the field of semiotic dynamics. Inspired by recent advances in the understanding of the naming game and by previous attempts to define stages in the formation of lexical languages, we define two classes of language game problems called the single and multiple word guessing games. By being more complex than naming games, but not as complex a...
متن کاملGuessing Games on Triangle-Free Graphs
The guessing game introduced by Riis [Electron. J. Combin. 2007] is a variant of the “guessing your own hats” game and can be played on any simple directed graph G on n vertices. For each digraph G, it is proved that there exists a unique guessing number gn(G) associated to the guessing game played on G. When we consider the directed edge to be bidirected, in other words, the graph G is undirec...
متن کاملAssessing Sports Advisory Services: Do They Provide Value for Football Bettors?
Jerry Fox Karl J. Mayer This study examined the effectiveness of sports advisory services in football betting. Using three different cases with recent data, it compared the actual outcomes of the football games to sports advisory services' predictions in order to test their prediction accuracy for those games. The results showed none of the three data sets exceeded the threshold for profitable ...
